The Sisodia clan ruled Rajasthan’s Kingdom of Mewar for centuries, fighting off repeated incursions from neighboring Muslim states, and by the 17th century their descendants had scattered across the region building fortress after fortress in case old wars reignited. Rawat Dwarka Das Ji, of a Sisodia offshoot called the Sangawat clan, built this imposing palace in 1670 to serve as both home and stronghold, and his descendants ruled the surrounding territory, once the fourth-largest feudal estate in Rajasthan, from inside its walls for generations.
The palace fell into serious disrepair over roughly three decades before the current royal lineage undertook a painstaking restoration, and it now operates as a heritage hotel while remaining partly occupied by the family. Its rooms still carry the family’s historical photographs and artifacts, and several date architecturally to the original 1670 construction.
