The Shekhawat clan traces its roots to Maharao Shekhaji, grandson of the Maharaja of Amer, who founded the sub-clan more than five centuries ago. His descendants, the Thakurs of Alsisar, built this mansion in 1892 as a vacation home to use when visiting Jaipur’s royal court, a retreat from their main seat in the Shekhawati region north of the city.
The haveli sat within Jaipur’s walled Pink City, close enough to the palace to matter but private enough to serve as a family escape. In 1994, the same family that had owned it for a century converted the mansion into a hotel, restoring its Rajput-style courtyards and adding 45 rooms furnished with hand-carved wood and antique pieces. It’s still run by Alsisar descendants today, alongside their other family properties in Rajasthan, including Alsisar Mahal in Jhunjhunu.
