Businessman Alarcón Zaragoza commissioned this residence in Guadalajara’s Colonia Americana in 1940, hiring architect Ignacio Díaz Morales, a significant figure in Mexican modernist and neo-colonial design, to build a home in the neighborhood where the city’s wealthiest families had long clustered their estates. The house kept its original carpentry and collection of European paintings largely intact even after a major 1990s renovation converted it into a boutique hotel.
Colonia Americana remains one of Guadalajara’s most architecturally distinguished districts, and the property sits within walking distance of the Hospicio Cabañas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for José Clemente Orozco’s murals. Casa Madonna La Providence joined Historic Hotels Worldwide in 2016.
