Investor Albert T. Repp led the group that built this hotel in 1926, naming it the Alterep after himself, right as Delray Beach was swelling with new construction during Florida’s short-lived 1920s land boom. Architect Martin Luther Hampton, an associate of famed Florida architect Addison Mizner, designed the building in Spanish Colonial Revival style with twin domed towers that remain the town’s most recognizable landmark.
Repp’s timing proved unlucky. The land boom collapsed almost as soon as the hotel opened, and Repp filed for bankruptcy not long after. The Boughton family bought the property in 1935 and has owned and operated it ever since, now into a third generation, preserving details like the original 1926 Otis elevator, a working telephone switchboard, and hand-woven wicker furniture in the lobby. It’s been a Historic Hotels of America member since 1999.
